EPA Provides One Time Extension to 2012 TSCA CDR Deadline (June 2012)

EPA has decided to increase the type and quantity of information it collects about commercial chemicals from chemical manufacturers. The new requirements will allow EPA to better manage and identify possible health and environmental risks associated with various chemicals. This new rule is known as the Chemical Data Reporting rule (CDR), and it requires companies to submit information electronically to the agency and limits confidentiality claims by companies. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is implementing these changes as a way to strengthen her commitment to EPA’s chemical management program and increase the transparency of critical information concerning chemicals.

Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) CDR requires critical chemical information to be reported more frequently, and the submission of new and updated information relating to potential chemical exposures, current production volume, manufacturing site data, and processing data will be required more often for a larger number of chemicals.

Information should be submitted using EPA’s electronic reporting tool.  Online reporting is expected to improve data quality, allowing EPA to use data more efficiently. In addition, the information will become more accessible to the public.

New reporting requirements will be implemented starting with the next data submission period, which will occur between February 1, 2012 and June 30, 2012.

Update: The 2012 submission deadline was scheduled to occur on June 30, 2012. As of June 11, 2012, EPA has amended the TSCA CDR regulations to allow for a one-time extension of the CDR reporting deadline by six weeks to August 13, 2012. Manufacturing, processing and use data from 2011 and production volume information from 2010 will be reported, and must now be reported by August 13, 2012.
