Prop 65: OEHHA Withdraws Notice of Intent to List Styrene (February 2013)

UPDATE:
California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has withdrawn its notice of intent to list styrene under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).

PREVIOUS INFORMATION:
California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) intends to list the chemical styrene as known to the state to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Substance Act of 1986 (Proposition 65). OEHHA has determined that styrene meets the criteria for listing under Proposition 65 based on findings by the National Toxicology Program (NTP). NTP’s report on styrene concluded that it was “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” The conclusion was based on limited evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans, sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in experimental animals, and supporting data on mechanisms of carcinogensis. Further information on listing criteria and process, report preparation and scientific peer review can be found in the article: Report on Carcinogens (http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/twelfth/roc12.pdf).

OEHHA is holding a public workshop and is requesting comments on the basis of listing styrene under Proposition 65. The workshop will take place on Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the California Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters Building to discuss whether NTP’s Report on Carcinogens has identified styrene as a human carcinogen or potential human carcinogen. The meeting will be held in the Coastal Hearing Room located at 1001 I St Sacramento California. In addition, OEHHA is extending the public comment period until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013. Please submit all comments and relating documents to
P65Public.Comments@oehha.com with “NOIL for styrene” in the subject line. Electronic submissions are encouraged but hard copy comments may also be mailed, faxed or delivered in person to the addresses:
