Prop 65: Listing of Emissions from High-Temperature Unrefined Rapeseed Oil (January 2014)

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has added emissions from high-temperature unrefined rapeseed oil, commonly referred to as canola oil, to the list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer under Proposition 65. This occurs from frying foods in unrefined rapeseed/canola oil past it boiling point. OEHHA notes that this notice does not pertain to emissions from refined rapeseed/canola oil (most commercially available rapeseed/canola oil is refined). This listing of emissions is based on formal identification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that this mixture of chemicals causes cancer. The listing is effective as of January 3, 2014.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an institution designated as authoritative for the identification of cancerous chemicals, published a report entitled Household Use of Solid Fuels and High-temperature Frying in 2010. Evidence described in the report includes studies showing that emissions from high-temperature unrefined rapeseed/canola oil caused increased incidence of combined malignant and benign lung tumors in male and female mice, and incidence of lung carcinoma in female rats.
