Pentachlorophenol By-Products (Complex Mixture) Listed Under Proposition 65 (November 2016)

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has added pentachlorophenol and by-products of its synthesis (complex mixture) to the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer. This listing applies to the mixture that results when pentachlorophenol and other compounds combine and interact during synthesis. The chemical itself has been listed since 1990.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) is just one institution that has the authority to identify chemicals as causing cancer, and is required to help OEHHA compile the list of chemicals under Proposition 65.

Chemical Uses

The complex mixture was previously a restricted-use pesticide and heavy duty wood preservative for industrial uses on items such as utility poles and cross arms.
