OEHHA Issues Safe Use Determination (SUD) for Vinyl Flooring Hazard Exposure to Workers (January 2017)

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has issued a Safe Use Determination (SUD) for exposures of professional flooring installers to diisononyl phthalate (DINP) in vinyl flooring products. SUDs are written statements documenting the review and application of Proposition 65 mandate to a certain subject. The agency evaluated this request using a screening method to assess the chemical’s No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) and determine a threshold for the amount of chemical that can be safely used in the product. The NSRL for DINP is 146 micrograms per day.

Vinyl Flooring and DINP

DINP is currently on the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. DINP is used in vinyl flooring as a plasticizer. Different categories of vinyl flooring products contain different amounts of DINP.
