21st Century Cures Act Signed Into Law (January 2017)

In 2016 the United States Congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act with a staggering level of bipartisan support. It is the largest piece of public health legislation to be passed in Congress since the Affordable Care Act in 2010.

The provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the ability to speed up the approval process of new drugs and medical devices, as well as increase funding for research and agency staffing. The Act also provides an enormous amount of funding including $1 billion over 2 years to combat the nation’s opioid epidemic, nearly $5 billion to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over 10 years, of which $1.8 billion is meant for former Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot program, and $500 million to FDA over 10 years.
