California Legislature Passes Stronger Plastic Microbeads Bill (September 2015)The California legislature recently passed a bill banning plastic microbeads from personal care products effective as of January 1, 2020. Previous plastics bills have aimed to cut back pollution from tiny plastic exfoliants; however, this new bill is targeted at biodegradable plastics as well.
While the personal care products industry has been supportive of producing less environmentally harmful products, they do not favor this latest measure. Many large consumer companies have voiced opposition to this latest bill and argue that the bill needs to allow for environmentally friendly alternatives in personal care products.
Bill supporters, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), maintain that the bill is aimed to develop a plastic policy that is environmentally friendly and does not pose a threat to public health. Supporters are confident that Governor Jerry Brown will sign the bill into law.
