State Pesticide Regulation

State Pesticide Overview

State and local governments have substantial authority to regulate the manufacture, distribution, sale, use and disposal of pesticides within their borders. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) recognizes this authority and grants state governments with regulatory power over pesticides that they would not otherwise have under state law alone. Registrants, distributors, retailers and users must be aware of laws in the state in which they operate, and take care to comply with state and local requirements.
