INTERNATIONAL TREATIES AND PROTOCOLS
Pesticides and industrial chemicals can be subject to any one or more of several international treaties including the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the POPs Protocol of the ECE Long Range Transportation of Air Pollutants. The U.S. is not yet a party to these treaties but legislation to ratify them is slowly moving through the Congress to ratify these treaties. TSG can provide the following types of assistance to its clients with regard to these treaties and their U.S. implications:
- Explain each of the treaties and its potential significance for the client's chemicals.
- Monitor activities under the treaties and notify clients if there is any consideration of their chemicals.
- Prepare and implement a strategy to avoid inclusion or at least to minimize effects on the client's chemical.
- Represent clients at international fora under these treaties to influence the direction being taken with respect to clients chemicals.
- Monitor progress and content of legislation moving through the U.S. Congress to ratify these treaties and the anticipated impact on marketing of treat-listed chemicals in the U.S.
