DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
Analysis and interpretation of data is one of TSG’s major strengths. Our senior scientists are experienced in evaluating data for anomalous results, trends, analytical false positives or negatives, etc. We also have successfully interpreted complex and non-intuitively obvious data not only to regulatory agencies but in legal actions and assignment of liability for pollution.
Examples of data interpretation and analysis by TSG that has been critical to our client’s success are:
- Reviewed raw data pertaining to reported sporadic high levels of pollutants in soil and water at a Superfund site. Determined that reanalysis had proven the high levels to be false positives caused by contamination within the laboratory. Results tables had not been corrected. Further remediation was therefore not required. [a]
- Reviewed chromatograms from analyses in a major study of pesticide levels in market commodities. Demonstrated that a certain proportion residues apparently present at low level were false positives, which allowed statistical correction to the percent of samples total that bore quantifiable residues.
Successfully defended a novel swimming pool chemical by presenting a white paper to the Agency that reconciled efficacy and concentration of active ingredient in a treated pool. [b] - In court, successfully explained to a jury that based on scientific principles, surface water pollution found near a client’s site could not have come from the client’s process.
- Interacted routinely with laboratories during startup or conduct of analyses to resolve potential problems revealed by data analysis. Facilitated completion of analytical phases of studies and avoided questions by regulatory agencies regarding the validity and relevance of submitted data.
- Frequently analyzed and interpreted existing data to a) obtain waivers of requirements for new or additional data and b) successfully respond to Agency requests for additional studies following review of submitted data (DER responses).
The examples given represent only a few of the ways in which TSG has assisted clients by analysis and interpretation of data. TSG’s staff brings a wide array of experience and knowledge to our client’s concerns. Data analysis, and interpretation based on sound scientific principles helps clients avoid unnecessary data collection and defend against invalid claims or charges.
